The African Lion, (Panthera leo), once widespread across much of the continent, is now classified as vulnerable, with an estimated population of only around 25,000 individuals left in the wild. Their numbers have drastically declined due to several factors, including habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and poaching. As human populations expand, lions are increasingly coming into contact with people, leading to retaliatory killings and loss of prey. The reduction of available land for lions to roam and hunt has further contributed to their shrinking range. Additionally, illegal hunting for their body parts, as well as trophy hunting, has placed additional pressure on their populations. Conservation efforts, including protected areas, community-based programs, and wildlife corridors, aim to safeguard lion habitats and mitigate human-wildlife conflict. However, the species continues to face significant challenges in ensuring long-term survival in the wild.
