The Spotted Hyena (Crocuta crocuta) is one of the most successful and adaptable predators in Africa, often misunderstood due to its scavenging behavior and association with the "laugh" it produces. These hyenas are highly intelligent, social animals that live in complex social structures known as clans, which can consist of up to 80 individuals. Spotted hyenas are found across sub-Saharan Africa, in savannas, grasslands, and woodlands, where they play a crucial role as both hunters and scavengers, helping to maintain the balance of their ecosystems.

Despite their role as apex predators, spotted hyenas face threats from habitat loss due to human encroachment, poaching, and conflicts with livestock farmers. As human populations expand, their habitats are being fragmented, which reduces their access to prey and water sources. Additionally, as livestock is often seen as prey, hyenas are sometimes targeted by farmers in retaliation for livestock losses. These threats, combined with competition for food resources and the loss of large wild herbivores to poaching, have caused some populations to decline.
